Energy Changes in Reactions
Energy is needed to break chemical bonds, and energy is released when chemical bonds are made. Bond-breaking is an endothermic process, and bond-making is an exothermic process. The difference between the energy needed to break the bonds in the reactants, and the energy given out when new bonds form in the products, is the energy change in the reaction.
